The following book designs were inspired by poems which required extensive research on the authors and their intent. It was essential to analyze the poem and read between the lines so as to accurately represent the subject matter.
Process & Results
My goal was for each cover to be distinctly different from one another in style and approach. Selecting three different poems that were of different subject matter; I placed myself in the shoes of someone browsing aisles of books. An avid book reader myself, I was guilty of always choosing books based off artwork. The Mystic Blue, a poem about the mysteries of the color blue, is presented in a grungy & mysterious way. A Color of the Sky, not actually about what its title may suggest, is extremely metaphorical. Therefore, I opted for an abstract style with an emphasis on typography. And Still, I Rise is about an African American woman whose very existence is challenged by society. I created it much like the way I read it: a lovely narrative of resilience and the strength it takes to rise above a world which doesn’t wish to see you succeed simply because of the color of your skin.
